On Saturday, October 18th, Albacore Park participated in the festivities celebrating the Sea Coast Science Center’s Members Day. Between the upcoming commissioning of USS New Hampshire and Albacore, there was a nice tie-in for the Center’s theme of “What Lurks Beneath the Sea”. We viewed this as another opportunity to further publicize the existence of the Park.
On the Park’s grounds, the Science Center set up a hospitality tent that offered refreshments and information about the Science Center and its many programs. Several Albacore shipmates gave guided tours of the boat for visiting Center members between 2 and 4 pm. The weatherman cooperated with a sunny but cool day.
After the 4 pm close of our portion of the celebration, several of us proceeded out to the Science Center and toured their facility. Among the things to see and do were samples of hardhat and scuba diving equipment, experiments on buoyancy, lectures on tide pools and phospherescence, and films on the Center’s many programs.
Albacore Park’s own Stephanie Render manned an information booth at the Center. The booth offered recorded sounds of the sea, a Phase IV model of Albacore and a display panel Stephanie put together presented information on sonar and highlighted some of Albacore’s unique features.
After touring through the Center, we adjourned to the galley which featured submarine sandwiches, a variety of beverages and tasty home made treats for dessert.
