2016 Spring Day of Caring
Friday, May 20th saw the gathering at Albacore Park of 29 volunteers from two local businesses. The occasion was the spring version of the United Way of the Greater Seacoast's Day of Caring. Participating for the fourth time were employees from the Thermo Fisher Scientific Laboratory Company and Prime Asia Leather Company.
Park Executive Director Jim Craig had prepared an ambitious multi-page list of work items for the groups to tackle. Some of the work included:
weeding a section of the Memorial Garden flower beds and trimming throughout the Park in preparation for mowing;
scraping, sanding and painting the exterior trim on the museum building;
removing rocks from the grassy areas in front of the boat and the side hill to facilitate later mowing;
watering the newly planted grass areas around the Park;
scrubbing bird droppings off benches, monuments,
propellers and Albacore's hull; wire brushing rust spots and preserving the brows; removing a deteriorated fence alongside the parking lot; straightening the mail box;
stuffing grab bags; vacuuming a/c vents in the museum; cleaning up trash along the Route 1 By-Pass; sweeping up loose straw ground cover from the basin walkway and freshening the paint on the sales area benches.
After a short lunch break of Moes submarine sandwiches, the groups were given a tour of the boat before they cleaned up the few remaining items on Jim's work list.

At the end of the day, the volunteers were tired and Jim's work list had been checked off. Everyone left with a gift bag that included free passes for a visit to the Park by family members.
Once again, Albacore Park has received the generous donation of many hours of fruitful labor by local businesses. A heartfelt thank you to all who participate in these outings that benefit non-profit organizations.
