2017 Youth Service Day

For the seventh time, Albacore Park was the beneficiary of the Berwick Academy's Youth Service Day, a day when the students go out into the community and apply themselves to the betterment of non-profit groups such as Albacore Park.

Nearly 50 strong in number, the students arrived at the Park shortly after 9 am. Several members of the Berwick Academy faculty and a number of parents accompanied them. After a welcome and some introductory remarks, the group was quickly broken up into four teams. Each team was assigned a section of the Park. Gloves, lawn rakes, trash bags and barrels were distributed, and each team set about cleaning up a portion of the grounds.

One team was assigned to clear some of the debris from the Memorial Garden area.

A second team began cleaning up the hillside behind the back section of the parking lot.

A third team worked the grassy area between the parking lot and the submarine.

The fourth team took on the cleaning of the propeller field and the propellers.

During the morning, each team broke away from their assigned tasks long enough to take a tour through Albacore led by a former crew member.

Work was wrapped up around noontime. Before boarding their bus to return to school, everyone was given a card about the Albacore and an Albacore decal as a thank you and a reminder of their day at Albacore Park.
