USS ALBACORE (AGSS 569)
NEWSLETTER # 74
January 2018

Dear Shipmate,

Happy New Year. Just a reminder that this is a reunion year - 9 to 12 August. You are urged to make accommodation reservations asap as summer is a busy time in the area. Here is a link to hotels, motels, inns and B&Bs in Portsmouth, the New Hampshire Seacoast and Southern Maine:

The grand opening of the new Sarah Mildred Long (middle) bridge did not happen as planned on 1 December. It appears there will be a quiet opening of the bridge to traffic sometime early in the year.  Probably no hot air from politicians, just exhaust from vehicles.

On this past Veteran's Day, the Portsmouth Submarine Memorial Association (PSMA) held a dedication ceremony that recognized the sacrifice of Motor Machinist Mate Chief (SS) Arthur Stanton. Chief Stanton was lost when the first USS Albacore (SS 218) struck a mine and sank with all hands in November of 1944. Chief Stanton's widow, Doris Stanton Jowers, served as the sponsor for USS Albacore (AGSS 569). Her daughter Anetta was the Maid of Honor at the christening. The photo below has Anetta's extended family gathered behind the text panel that provides information about the Chief and the involvement of the Stanton family with the new Albacore.

Also participating in the ceremony, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Color Guard presented the colors and members of the Thresher Base of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. conducted a "Tolling of the Bell" ceremony recognizing those lost along with Chief Stanton.

In addition to the text panel, a granite bench was also dedicated by the family to the memory of Arthur and Doris Stanton. Two of Anetta's granddaughters unveiled the bench shown below. At the conclusion of the ceremony, a reception was held inside the new storage building.

PSMA held its annual meeting at the Strawbery Banke Visitor's Center on Thursday, November 16th. Highlights from the meeting include:

            • The adult price of admission will increase to $8 beginning in January.

            • There were about 3,000 more visitors in 2017 than in 2016.

            • Net gift shop sales were up over $1,700.

            • The bow brow repairs cost $12,000.

            • A new "Introduction to Albacore Park" movie is now playing at the Visitors Center.

            • The new storage building is up and in use.

            • An Albacore Advisory Committee was formed to aid the PSMA Board with long-range planning advice.

            • Albacore Park is the #2 attraction in the Portsmouth area behind only Strawbery Banke.

I regret to report that shipmate Steve Atkatz departed on Eternal Patrol on 30 November 2017, Kirk Newell on 11 January 2018 and Paul Hickey on 15 January 2018.
