Portsmouth Submarine Memorial Association
The Portsmouth Submarine Memorial Association (PSMA) was formed to display and maintain the USS Albacore – a diesel powered experimental submarine operated by the U.S. Navy until 1972. Today, Albacore welcomes over 40,000 visitors a year to the Park. Many members of the PSMA are former crewmembers who served on Albacore during her 19 year life.
PSMA is actually the “custodian” of the Albacore and not the owner. Technically the Navy still owns Albacore and can reclaim her at any time. As custodian, PSMA is required to maintain ex-Albacore in a condition acceptable to the Navy. To ensure the PSMA is doing its job properly, the Navy now inspects Albacore every other year.
The Park includes a Memorial Garden which contains monuments honoring the lives lost in the submarine service of the U.S. Navy. A recent addition recognizes the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard employees who built and maintain the subs, the crews who man the boats, and the volunteers who help maintain the Park.
Central to the actual operation of the Park is the Visitor’s Center. Located between Albacore and the Memorial Garden, this building houses a museum and gift shop, and serves as the starting point for visitor tours.
