September 2017

Dear Shipmate,

Too many years ago, Friends of Albacore (FOA) started an Oral History Project only to see it stall when we ran out of money. Thanks to Ken Herrick, currently President of the Portsmouth Submarine Memorial Association (PSMA), additional funds were given to the Friends of Albacore by the State of New Hampshire and the Federal Highway Authority. Those dollars became available as a consequence of New Hampshire buying a portion of Albacore Park's property needed for the replacement middle (Sarah Long) bridge.

We have contracted with CreateSpace and Amazon to sell copies of the history on line. In addition, we are working with our web master to make available a "read only" version accessible on our Albacore web site.  The book also is available on Kindle. All books purchased will yield royalty payments to FOA. While both on-line stores are selling the book for $19.99 plus shipping, CreateSpace provides almost twice the royalty payment to Friends of Albacore per book sold.

You may order on-line by going to one of the sites listed below:

The replacement middle bridge is progressing with a tentative opening date of 10 November. The center (lift) span is due to be floated into place on 30 September. Below is a current photo showing the center span lifting sheaves sitting atop the Portsmouth-side towers.

The climate-controlled building mentioned in the last newsletter is essentially done.  The HVAC unit needs to be installed and paving of the ramp and sidewalk are the last items needed before PSMA begins to move records into the building.

Repairs to Albacore's dented hull will resume this month with the shaping of the plates by the shipyard and their welding in place by an outside (non-government) contractor. PSMA Board members Jim Wakefield and Ken Herrick continue to oversee this effort.

Shipmate Ron Chase has a new email of "". Tom Bachman also has a new email of "". Ernie Mallet has a new phone number of (207) 751-7373.

I regret to report that shipmate Ron Pool departed on Final Patrol on 29 July 2017. Ron was a RM1 while serving on Albacore in 1963. An Albacore Condolence Card was sent to the family. Shipmate Ed Crowley went on Final Patrol in November of 2016. Ed was an ET when on Albacore '54-'55.

Together with this newsletter, 2018 Reunion Chairman John Gandiello is sending out an information flyer that lays out the costs and information on the various dining places for our August 9-12 2018 gathering. John is working with Park Executive Director Jim Craig and PSMA President Ken Herrick on the nitty gritty reunion details. John wants everyone to know that the reunion committee will be compiling a notebook of memories from the crew that they will have on display during the reunion. Whether you plan to attend the reunion or not, if you have any memories you would like to share, please send them to John either by email "" or snail mail John Gandiello, 5018 Lilium Drive, Plainfield IN  46168.

September 16th will see the celebration of Naval History Day at the Park. The central theme this year is the surrender of German U-boats at the shipyard at the end of WWII. A special feature will be the debut and book signing of our own USS Albacore An Oral History featuring the recollections of 23 individuals who served on Albacore or were involved in her life.

If you are receiving this newsletter via Uncle Sam’s postal service, it is because we do not have an e-mail address for you. In addition to the 186 copies sent out electronically, there are 38 more that go out as a hard copy. We would prefer to be totally GREEN and deliver the newsletters electronically to save on paper and stamps. So, if you have recently gotten on-line, or had a change of address, telephone number, e-mail provider or if you just have something you would like to submit for posting on the website, please pass that information along to Jack Hunter by snail or e-mail or via phone.

Until next time, shipmate.
